With a little training and a small investment, you will reap the benefits of working with your therapy dog to positively impact children’s lives by improving literacy skills. Simply follow the steps below to get started! Step One: Obtain Pet Assisted Therapy Certification Obtaining certification gives you and your animal insurance coverage. If you have certification with insurance coverage recognized by READ, skip to step 2. If not, you can expect this step to take 30 days (depending upon your investment of time) from the time you complete the application, training and get your animal tested and to receive your approval. Log onto www.TherapyDogs.com and choose How to become a member from the home page menu. Look at the Therapy Dog Inc Testing doc and make sure that your dog can complete all that he/she will be tested for and also complete the application. Once you feel you can complete the Therapy Dog Inc Testing which is detailed in the Become a Member section, contact Pat Ennis at 904.731.2308 to do your evaluation. Step Two: Become READ Certified Before you become a READ Team you must have completed step one above. READ is a registered trademark of the Intermountain Therapy Dogs (ITA) www.therapyanimals.org. Each team is required to register. Our pet assisted therapy corporation Pawsitive Pets, Inc. is an affiliate group of READ. The training package including a manual, training DVD & shipping is $75. Members of Pawsitive Pets pay a reduced one-time membership fee of $40. The application is in the READ manual. The bandana for your pet is $10 and your READ shirt is $30. Pawsitive Pets will reimburse your expenses as we receive donations. Call Kathy Klotz with ITA at 801-272-3439 to order your manual and video (you will have to request both) which will have training information for both you and your dog. You can expect this step to take no longer than 30 days from the time you complete the manual, complete the application, receive your pet and personal apparel and acquire your approval letter. Train New Commands Your dog will need some practice and learn three new commands. First, find a space definer that you will use – a rug or blanket. Read out loud with your dog at home on the floor and train the following commands. “Look” is to focus their attention on the book. Use small treats, such as liver treats, hidden between the pages to encourage your dog’s interest in a book. “Touch” is to have them touch their nose to the book. Clicker training is a quick way to train this. “Paw Stay” is to have them put their paw on the pages. Once you have some of the commands trained, find a child to practice with! In the manual you will find a section on tips and skills for you as the facilitator.

A dog can hear sounds 250 yards away that most people cannot hear beyond 25 yards. The human ear can detect sound waves vibrating at frequencies up to 20,000 times a second. But dogs can hear sound waves that vibrate at frequencies of more than 30,000 times a second. World's largest dog..... The worlds heaviest as well as longest dog ever recorded was an Old English Mastiff named Zorba. In 1989, Zorba weighed 343 lbs and was 8 feet 3 inches long from nose to tail! World's smallest dog..... The smallest dog in history was a tiny Yorkie from Blackburn, England. At two years of age and fully grown this little dude was an incredible 2.5 inches tall by 3.75 inches long! He weighed only 4 ounces! HE was approximately the size of a matchbox. World's oldest dog..... The oldest dog that has been reliably documented was an Australian cattle-dog named Bluey. He was put to sleep at the age of 29 years and 5 months!
